Some notes on past travels...
- My grandma (Oma) is German, so many trips past, present and future take place in Germany. Family ties are in the Allgäu region, extreme south and central. My cousin lives in Freiburg, next to the French and Swiss borders. I didn't visit Berlin until just recently, and none of my German family has been there since it's so distant physically, historically, ideologically... but it's one of my favo(u)rite cities in the world that I hope to return to many times.
- I did a quickie study abroad in undergrad traveling around Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, both the Federation and Republika Srpska. We studied "Communities in Transition," as the big civil war/genocides had been 10 years previous, and it has been interesting to watch the last additional 10 years to see what progress has been made (Croatia) or has not (Bosnia).
- While in dental school I participated in two dental mission trips providing free care abroad. One year I went to Juárez, Mexico, and another year I went to Haiti, mostly Port-au-Prince, but we had a clinical day in Jacmel as well. I hope to embark on similar trips in the future.
- The last few years' traveling has been dictated by work schedule, and it has consisted of mostly short and long weekend trips to single, closeby destinations, and a week or two farther away as vacation time accrues.
- Places in the future that my heart desires ever so greatly are Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, plenty of Middle East flavo(u)r, a good dose of Asia and Latin America... there is no where I don't desire to visit (I think?), so anywhere is game.
